Top 24 Announced for DBH 10K Contest

It’s that time of the year, where talented artists from all over the world come together to compete for Design By Humans ‘ fat $10,000 prize.  They recently announced their top 24 finalists, which include a lot of really interesting, trend-bucking designs. Today, I’ll be covering the cream of the crop: designs that not only excel artistically, but actually look like something I’d want to wear.  I think a lot of artists — especially on a site willing to print daring designs, like DBH — forget that flashier doesn’t always equal better, and often will stray into the realm of gaudiness.  Sadly, I can spot a few shirts in the mix that already fall into this trap. While muttley’s “ Into the Light ” doesn’t break many creative barriers, it looks damn good on a t-shirt.  There is some excellent technical work at play here — sharp, art-deco like graphics stand strong against the brilliant light in the center and the dark background of the tee.  The design fades well into the black tee, though it makes me wonder if DBH will be able to reproduce the subtle colors that make the fade so successful.  Either way, this design’s got my vote — it’s stunningly beautiful without being excessive. I also really like sebasebi’s “ Deeply “.  This is just a really lovely concept that I can see being popular with both male and female customers.  The colors help give it that dream-like quality, in turn punching up the great sense of mood.  The placement of the light blazing through the water is great, but the composition kind of falls short in that the direction of the light works counter intuitively against the placement of the woman at the bottom.  Your eye is drawn down and left as you follow the light, but suddenly you’re brought back to the far right when you get to the lady and her frilly dress.  It’s not a deal-killer, though, and this design is still beautiful the way it is.
